Centrifugal compressor test rig

At the centrifugal compressor test rig, single fast-rotating high-loaded centrifugal compressors are investigated. In addition to measuring the compressor performance map, detailed flow field measurements are made in order to analyze the three dimensional flow field within the rotor and the diffuser by using conventional probes and several optical measuring methods like L2F, PIV and DGV. Only optical techniques are applicable within the rotating component.

Laser-2-Focus Velocimetry (L2F)

The L2F technique is a non-intrusive technique for the measurement of flow velocities in gases and liquids. The velocity of extremely small particles is recorded, which are usually present in all technical flows or may be added if required. The light scattered by the particles when irradiated by a light source is used in this measurement.

Liquid Crystal (LC)

Thermochromic liquid crystals (LC) are used for visualization of the surface temperature distribution of streamlined bodies / profiles. Compared to measurement processes in which a temperature difference between outer flow and the model is prodeced and thereby the surface temperature influenced by heat flow is determined, a constant ambient temperature (without heat flux) the adiabatic wall temperature can be determined. It is advantageous to thermally isolate the model.

M2VP compressor test rig (Multi-stage 2-shaft compressor test rig)

The scope of the compressor research of the institute of propulsion technology ranges from measuring the compressor performance map and detailed flow field measurement up to special applications like e.g. active noise control or counter-rotating prop fans. For the experimental investigation of axial machines the Multi-stage 2-shaft compressor test rig is available.

Transonic Cascade Wind Tunnel (TGK)

Experimental investigation of sub- and transonic flow through plane compressor cascade. The main task of the test facility is the exact determination of losses, performance parameters and working range of compressor profiles. Due to the very good optical and measuring accessibility, secondary flow phenomena can be studied in detail.
